After almost a year of Wednesday nights at Havana, we have decided to end STUDIO! It's been an amazing run and a lot of great evenings full of friends, disco music, dancing, and let's just say a good dose of drinking. That being said, like all great things...they must come to and end. H.M.A. and I (Pat Les Stache) have decided to move on to new things. When we first started the night we wanted to achieve two things, share our love of disco music and create a friendly place for people to hangout and dance on a Wednesday night, which we feel like we successfully accomplished. Hopefully all of you who regularly attended the night will have some great memories to take with you.

So...join us this Wednesday Night for the final and last STUDIO! Let's try to end this thing with a bang! There will be no cover so that you can save your money for drinking. Plus, this will be my actual 28th B-Day, so I'm sure there might be some cake involved!

Once again, Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the night. This Wednesday, let's do it one more time and make it a night to remember.

I Love The Nightlife

Here is one of the re-edits that will be including on the next Cabana Disco twelve-inch. This time around, Pat Les Stache (aka me), is re-editing Nightlife Unlimited's 1979 smooth disco classic Love Is In You. This track has always been a personal favorite of mine, a feel good classic that I enjoy playing at the end of a night, when the dancefloor is winding down. Look for the second twelve-inch in the Cabana Disco series to come out at the end of January. Enjoy!

Time To 'Get Happy'

I know I just posted a couple of Tantra cuts off of the 1980 classic Double Album LP, however this record is just too good to hold back. That being said, here is my favorite track off the record, "Get Happy". A true classic that I think get's overshadowed by some of the group's more known classics like "Hills Of Katmandu", "Wishbone", "Mother Africa", etc. New extended remixed versions of "Get Happy" along with "Top Shot" were also released as a twelve-inch single a year after the release of The Double Album, under the title The Double Remix. I actually found a copy of this record a week after I found The Double Album LP, talk about lucky streak. Anyways, sit back and enjoy this hard-to-find classic!

Inside The Moonlight Mansion

I was excited to recently find a copy of Harlow's 1980 Taking Off LP. Up until finding the record, I hadn't ever heard of this disco group. That being said, after one listen I completely fell in love with the record, which contains multiple classic disco cuts including "Moonlight", "Frisco", "Movie Queen", and the title track "Taking Off". The titled track was the record's main single, however "Moonlight" is quickly becoming an all-time favorite of mine. The record was produced by both Mike Alyanak and Alex Alexander, whom also is credited with writing and arranging the record. Overall, a very solid find for a record I never previously heard of.

Ride Like The Wind

As many might already know, I'm a huge Vince Montana Jr. fan, everything from his earlier work with MFSB, to The Salsoul Orchestra, Goody Goody, and his Montana Orchestra(which went through many different names and players). In 1983, under Montana Orchestra, Vince released the Heavy Vibes LP which included some solid disco classics including another take on the popular "Heavy Vibes", as well as less talked about gems "Ride Like The Wind", "Another Star", and "Rough Out Here". "Ride Like The Wind", which is a personal favorite, is his instrumental take on the popular Christopher Cross track released back in 1979. I've always considered Cross's version to be a guilty favorite of mine, however Montana takes the song to new heights here with some funky instrumental work, including a solid saxophone lead that carries throughout the song. This isn't one of the most talked about Vince Montana Jr. records, however it's definitely one that should be ignored either, especially for Montana fans like myself.

Even Though You're Wearing Jeans...

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend. I'm going to start this holiday season off with a song that has really grown on me over the past few months in Lenore O'Malley's 1979 disco classic "First Be A Woman". "First Be A Woman" was the title track to O'Malley's debut record released by Polydor in 1980. This record was produced by Michaele, Lana & Paul Sebastian, the same team responsible for many of the classic disco releases by Madleen Kane and Theo Vaness. Even though it took me sometime to warm-up to this certain aspects of the song, I've found that over time I've really started to enjoy the song as a whole, especially the song's funky verses. Enjoy!

Here is a funky disco rarity that I've been enjoying a lot lately in Sweet Talks 1979 "Do The Beat". This classic cut is the single and opening track to the groups selt-titled record. I believe this was the only release for the group, Sweet Talks, which was produced by McKinley Jackson who also helped produce artists like First Choice, Tower of Power, The Jones Girls, Lamont Dozier, and many others. Sweet Talk's "Do The Beat" is a rare funky classic that I highly recommend hunting down.

Double The Pleasure

I was extremely excited recently when I came across Tantra's classic 1980 Double Album LP. This is one of those records I thought I would never come across, however, one day when I was walking through Seattle's Capitol Hill district I noticed it in the window of a record store called Wall of Sound and I instantly stopped in my tracks and when in bought the record without flinching. This amazing record, which was written and arranged by legendary disco mastermind Celso Valli, is combination of Tantra's 1980 Mother Africa LP and their classic 1979 "Hills Of Katmandu / Wishbone" twelve-inch. "Hills Of Katmandu" and "Wishbone" probably represent the group's most standout cuts on this double vinyl collection, however you can't ignore the solid afro-disco classic "Su-Ku-Leu" and the funky album cut "Get Happy". Regardless of what you enjoy best, this is definitely a true disco classic. I'm just happy that I stubbled across it at least once in my lifetime.

A Look Inside the Lost Disco Library

Here is a very interesting and creative new release from the great guys over at DJhistory.com that I highly recommend checking out. Basically they got together a bunch of unreleased disco library music and had it re-edited by some of today's best disco producers. Here's the 'official' story told by the guys at DJhistory.com:

"A whole album of never-heard original disco, lovingly retouched by the world’s finest remixers. In 1979 the cream of French and British session musicians gathered to record some of the most scorching disco music ever committed to vinyl. As a series of ‘Disco & Co’ albums on the Tele Music library label, this ended up as radio talk-show sound-beds and backing music for car chases on French cop shows. Le Sweeney, anyone? The few copies that slipped out were highly prized: today an original copy of the Arpadys LP goes for £300, if you can find one. As a service to disco, DJhistory has unearthed the original tapes and recruited an all-star cast of splicing fingers – The Unabombers, Ray Mang, The Idjut Boys, Leo Zero, Mudd, Al Kent, Faze Action, Mudd and Toby Tobias – to polish them up for today’s dancefloors. The results speak for themselves."

On this Friday, I think I will post my favorite Taka Boom track in "Night Dancin'". This song was included as the leading single off of her 1979 self-titled debut album. I was happy to find this record when I visited my hometown of Sacramento, Ca. this past summer. For those that don't know, Taka Boom, who's name is really Yvonne Stevens, is the sister of Chaka Khan. Even though I think "Night Dancin'" is by far the best track off of her self-titled record, I also find myself enjoying other album cuts like "Red Hot" and "Cloud Dancer". Sticky Fingers was a Three Hats Productions (aka THP) release on Prelude records in 1978. It was produced by the fantastic team of Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison, the brains behind THP. As per usual, the album inlists the vocal talents of Phylis and Helen Duncan (aka The Duncan Sisters). If you've never heard of them there is a great blog entry regarding them on Tommy's Disco Delivery site. And there's a very sweet write-up about them over at The Disco Museum. A surprise guest on the album is the associate producer Francois Kervorkian.

This album is fantastic from start to finish. Party Song in particular starts out as a slow funky thing, then moves on to a full on work out. But like I said, I don't have a favorite track, 'cause the whole damn thing is solid!

Try and listen to this thing without moving. I'll tell you it's impossible, and I'm totally feeling it today.

Up Jumped The Disco

Here is another fine disco classic from John Davis & The Monster Orchestra, this time being the 1977 cut "Up Jumped The Devil". This was the title track, as well as featured twelve-inch single off of the group's second album. This record was, of course, written and produced by disco legend John Davis and featured other solid cuts including "The Magic Is You (Main Theme)" and "You Gotta Give It Up ". Overall, it's just one of the many classic songs and records John Davis and his Monster Orchestra released during a brilliant career.

Lately I've been getting into Bob McGilpin's second LP, Get Up. This record was released in 1979 on Butterfly Records (a label that released many of my all-time favorite disco records). This record consists of some solid disco classics including "54", "Get Up & Do It Again", "Get Loose", my personal favorite in "Disco Dancer", and the record's single "Sexy Thing". This was McGilpin's last great record in my opinion, with his 1980 self-titled follow-up creating little excitement. However that being said, I think McGilpin, like many disco artists, put together some solid disco releases within a relatively short amount of time during the late 1970's.

I've been holding off posting this more 'themed' disco track until Halloween. With that being said, here is two cuts, "Soul Dracula" and "Sex Me" off of Hot Blood's 1977 Disco Dracula LP. Hot Blood was a German studio disco project that gained some attention with "Soul Dracula" in 1975 which promoted the group to do their only full-length LP. I guess it would be hard to continue to create songs about sex, disco, and draculas....the more I think about that, maybe not. Anyways, Happy Halloween!

I pretty exhausted on this Thursday, as I am on most Thursdays (because of STUDIO!). That being said, I'm going to keep it short with a one of my favorite Boys Town Gang cuts in "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". This hi-energy disco cut was originally released on the San Francisco based group's 1981 Disc Charge LP and was produced by Bill Motley, a local bay area deejay who was inspired to form a group that catered to the city's large gay clientele. One of those classic disco covers that everyone loves to sing along to at the end of night.

I'm looking forward to another great 'disco night' tonight at Studio!. To get things started, here is one of Dimitri From Paris's amazing edit of Sylvester's 1980 disco classic "I Need You". This edit was featured on Dimitri's In The House of Love mix compilation released a few years back. If you still haven't heard that compilation, I highly recommend checking it out as it features some of Dimitri's best work. I would also recommend checking out the rare twelve-plus minute Tom Moulton mixed version, which is equally as good. Overall, it's another great example of Dimitri enhancing an already beautiful disco classic.

I found this cut browsing around on youtube.com and immediately fell in love. Here is one of Arabesque's rare disco classic "Friday Night". This extremely hard-to-find gem was released as a 7-inch single in 1978 by the all female German group. This was one of their earliest singles to an overall successful career, selling more than 6 million records worldwide by catching on first in Japan before gaining a lot of popularity in Europe. Other notable disco classics to that I recommend checking out are "Midnight Dancer", "In The Heat Of A Disco Night", "Hello Mr. Monkey", and "High Life" among many others. Overall, this is a very rare disco classic that can be quite expensive. It would nice to see someone re-issue a bootleg copy of this amazing track. ENJOY!

One of the films I was excited to see featured at this years Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival is Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell. The film festival, which is in it's 13th year, is showing this engaging documentary about Arthur Russell, a cellist, composer, and dance music producer during the late 1970's and early 1980's. Russell was the center piece of such classic dance songs like Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face", Dinosaur L's "Go Bang", Dinosaur's "Kiss Me Again", and his solo cut of "Let's Go Swimming". Russell's songwriting didn't just touch the dancefloor, as he experimented with avant-garde productions such as his 1986 masterpiece World Of Echo LP, as well as numerous instrumental compositions which were included in the recently released First Thought Best Thought. Arthur throughout his musical career was constantly redefining himself, blending elements of pop, dance, disco, folk, avant-garde, and anything else that inspired him. In Wild Combination, director Matt Wolf mixes Russell’s music with perceptive reminiscences from colleagues and family, performance clips, and evocative landscapes. This mesmerizing documentary mirrors Russell’s free spirit, while successfully translating his distinctive aesthetic into an eclectic yet cohesive film.

Paradise Island Disco

I recently heard the studio disco band, The Wonderland Band for the first time when I came across their 1979 twelve-inch record Paradise Island. This disco cut was originally included on their solid 1979 LP, Wonder Woman which was produced by Morrie Brown. Most of the group's cuts were disco versions of superhero style themed songs. That being said, I'm unsure how the "Paradise Island" track fits into all of that, however there is definitely something about the song, possibly the fact that listening to it makes me think of a outdoor disco party on a tropical beach somewhere, that I can't seem to get enough of. Regardless, as the days grow colder as we enter the fall, here is a song to remind you of those warmer disco nights a few months back!

Like I've said in previous posts, Barrabas is one of my all-time favorite disco 'bands', often blending latin, disco, funk, and rock genres together to produce some amazing and influential songs and records during the 1970's. That being said, the buck didn't stop there, with Barrabas releasing one of their best cuts, "On The Road Again", in 1981 when Fernando Arbex re-formed the group with new members after a short lived hiatus. I can't say that much came out of the 1980's for the newly formed Barrabas, however what I can say was they were at least able to capture the magic at least one more time with "On The Road Again".

I've been lovin' this track for quite sometime now, playing it the past few weeks in the earlier hours on Wednesdays. I slightly favor this more downtempo dance cut over the two other solid album cuts "Don't Be So Mean (In Your Jeans)" and the album opener "Late For Love". I recommend picking up a copy of Just Bruni if you can find a copy, however the "Fantasy twelve-inch, which includes "Don't Be So Mean (In Your Jeans)", will be just fine.

I recently found a mint copy of Bob-A-Rela's 1979 selt-titled LP lodged tightly away at the bottom of a stack of records at a local record shop. I admit that at the time I didn't know anything about the record until I closely looked at records credits to find that the album was produced by both George Lagios and Pat Deserio, a tag-team of legendary disco producers who are resposible for bringing us two classic records by Bombers among many others. Deserio also had a helping hand in producing Kebekelektrik as well a couple classic releases off of Les Disques Direction Records. I found, after one listen, that the Bob-A-Rela LP consisted of that same solid production that made both Bombers' records disco classics. Wi th standout cuts like "Spend The Night", "Why Does It Rain?", and a couple of cover songs including "Tobacco Road" and Pink Floyd's "Money". Overall, the record is very solid, and highly recommended for fans of the seond Bomber's record.

Don't Make Me Wait, All Night

What better to end a work week and start the weekend than with a Todd Terje edit of Peech Boys' 1982 classic "Don't Make Me Wait". I find that this is one of those classic tracks that seems to have a million different mixes and edits. That being said, on this edit, Terje chooses to leave the songs general framework alone while instead focusing on re-working the songs vocals by bringing them in-and-out while using a lot of delay and reverb effects. Overall, it's a nice sudtle edit to an already amazing dance classic. I wouldn't mind seeing this one make it's way onto a future twelve-inch, if you know what I mean.

The late Sharon Redd sang on some solid disco cuts during the late 1970's and early 1980's including Beat The Street, Can You Handle It, You Got My Love , Love Is Gonna Get Ya , among many others. One of my favorite tracks in which Redd sang on was Front Page's 1979 disco classic "Love Insurance". This classic which was produced by Rick Tell, Burt Szerlip, and Cory Robbins, is a hi-energy dancefloor gem that really helped showcase Sharon Redd as a solid lead vocalist. As I listen to this track I also find that I'm a huge fan of tracks instrumental breaks, displaying some nice percussion and overall rhythm work. Overall it's classic disco song, that really helps highlight Sharon Redd at her finest.

It would be an understatement to say I love Chas Jankel. He's sort of a hero to me. Lost after his rock era, he turned to his own style of jazz-inflected disco, and somehow managed to create a catalog of great albums and even better singles. Remixers and re-Editors are just rediscovering Chas thanks to the compilation of singles that was released last year, My Occupation.

So here's an old favorite and Chas' first big solo hit, "Ai No Corrida" (which I think I'm going to try to rock out next week), and his new single, "Get Yourself Together", as well as the Hercules And Love Affair Remix.

Ah... Does early euro-disco get any more beautiful than this?!?!

While it doesn't share much with the classic euro-disco acts, being more French/Gainsbourg sounding than most of the disco coming from the continent, even though the group consisted of two spanish flamenco singers!

Fun Fact: They were chosen to represent Luxembourg (?!?!) in 1978's Eurovision song contest!

The instrumentation on this is just perfect! And every once in awhile the little moog comes out and you hear the little synthetic chords peek out over those violins. No wonder this song sold more than 16 million copies on it's release!

Here is the "mush requested" and much enjoyed disco classic "Bamalama" in it's entirety. This 1977 disco medley by Belle Epoque definitely takes the listener on a rollercoaster of different grooves, starting with "Bamalama" and then continuously going into partial moments of other songs including "Drink Me", "Taste Of Destruction", "Good Golly Miss Moly", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", and therefore concluding the song with a live recorded concert medley. Obviously, I find that most deejays tend to mix out of the song after the first seven to eight minutes when the song is still in it's "Bamalama-mode". That being said, I think for disco medley's, which seemed to be more popular back in the 1970's than now, "Bamalama" is one of the best I've ever heard. Even though I know that most of you(whom are deejays) will mix out of this track before the second half of the song begins, however I highly recommend that everybody listen to the entire mix at least a couple times to grasp the amazing arrangement of the entire classic.

It may seem strange, but yeah, even as disco was revolutionizing the way records were pressed, giving us the first DJ friendly 12" singles, many record companies were still pressing their artists on 45.

That's no surprise for artists such as ABBA or Michael Jackson, who had one foot firmly planted in the world of pop, but for many small label disco artists, it amazing that they had pressings on this mostly unusable for the dance floor variety of vinyl.

So whenever I find something unique on 45 I can usually be found pulling money out of my wallet.

Here are four different disco 45's I've found in the last few months that have been getting some play on my turntables at home.

Rainbow Society Orchestra - All Of Me "Disco"

Don't know anything about this group at all, in fact I can't even find production credits on it. It's from a very small label our of Philly called Jamie Records. The vocals are done by a woman calling herself "Aquarius". Pretty fun stuff!

Biddu Orchestra - I Could Have Danced All Night from "My Fair Lady"

This Biddu arranged Lerner/Lowe classic is really an instrumental with the vocalists singing "Dance, Dance Dance" over and over again, but it's pretty great none the less! I know Pat Les Stache is a huge fan of Biddu's work, so this is really for him!

Dee D. Jackson - Automatic Lover

Classic on a scratchy old 45! Some songs I've just never found any other way. I know there is a 12" out there somewhere, but.... Favorite thing about this is the fact that they can't just get a vocoder, they have to go and get some guy to record himself sounding, like, all robotic and shit! Hilarious! "I am your automatic lover!"

Eruption Featuring Precious Wilson - One Way Ticket

I think this comes from Eruption's second LP. Precious goes from sounding extremely plain to soulfull bellowing in no time flat. This, of course, is a Frank Farian production, which is why it sounds EXACTLY like Boney M. Pat and I are secret admirers of Mr. Farian's work..... Don't tell anyone. It'll ruin our reputations!

Accidental Cosmic Lover

Even though legendary disco label Tom N' Jerry Records has only a handful of releases to it's name, the label produced some of the best disco to come out of the late 1970's including David Christie's Back Fire, Rockets On The Road Again, TJM's self-titled LP, Chocolat's Kings Of Club, and Lipstique's At The Discotheque to name a few. This label which was distributed through Salsoul Records was run by legendary mixer/producer Tom Moulton, whom was involved in almost all of the releases in some fashion or another. One of the records from this label that I heard for the first time recently, is Mc Lane Explosion's 1978 cosmic disco LP Pulstar. This record was mixed by Moulton and produced by Roland Romanelli, the same person behind the italo-disco project Space. Overall, Pulstar has an early cosmic disco feel to it, reworking cover versions of Love & Kisses' "Accidental Lover", Space's "Magic Fly", and Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygène". The record is a nice blending mix of early cosmic, disco, and italo, which just happens to be three of my favorite genres. Enjoy!

This week a re-issue of Linda Law's classic disco single Nights In White Satin was released. This original 1978 release featured two amazing cuts, the title track "Nights In White satin" and my personal favorite "All The Night". From what I can tell, this was the only solo release from Linda Law, whom also spent some time as a backing singer on some lesser known disco releases during the 1970's. Regardless, this is a great re-issue of a much hard-to-find classic and I recommend everyone picking up a copy while they still last.

One of the more memorable cuts from this past Wednesday's STUDIO! was Karen Silver's classic 1981 disco cut "Nobody Else". This Gino Soccio produced song came off of Silver's second LP, Set Me Free. I hadn't played this track for quite a while with her 1979 "Hold On I'm Coming" usually getting more of the spotlight, however I thought I would change it up a bit and give the crowd something different. That being said, "Nobody Else" is probably my favorite Karen Silver track with it having a that Gino Soccio "stut-to-this" groove that made songs like "Try It Out" and "Dancer" such great classics. A great track that has been sitting on the shelves for too long.

To get you ready for this evening's disco workout, here is Slick's classic 1979 disco cut "Space Bass". Slick were basically comprised of the instrumental section of another great disco/funk group, Fat Larry's Band. "Space Bass" along with another great cut "Sexy Cream" became the group's most memorable tracks off their solid Fantasy Records released self-titled debut LP. Even though Slick never captured the same magic on their follow-up record Go For It, they left behind a true classic with their explosive debut record.

This weekend, I found myself listening to more than once, Jim Capaldi's 1979 disco classic "Shoe Shine". British drummer and former member of Traffic stepped into the 'disco world' back in 1979 and released Electric Nights on RSO Records. This record included the track "Shoe Shine", which was the album's single and standout track. I can't say that I know much about Capaldi's music career outside of this record and I can't say that I'm much of a Traffic fan, however that being said, Capaldi has definitely won me over for at least one record.

I Was Born This Way

What would be more fitting on the afternoon before a STUDIO! night, than posting one of the all-time greatest gay anthems "I Was Born This Way" by gay gospel singer Carl Bean. This record originally came out in 1977 on Motown Records, and was more recently re-released by West End Records. The song was produced by Motown and disco legend Norman Harris and was mixed by the 'one and only' Tom Moulton (whom else). Singer Carl Bean was very passionate about doing this song, not only musically but politically, as it's explained on the West End Record website -
"The lyrics to 'I Was Born This Way,'" he says, "are as relevant today — perhaps even more so in the current political and social climate — than they were when this record was first released back in 1977."

Overall the song is a powerful and amazing disco gem, that will truly serve as more than just a memorable dance classic, however a pollitical anthem for gay rights and equality.

Along with finding a used copy of Machine's 1979 self-titled record a few weeks back, I picked up a lesser known classic in Gregg Diamond's 1979 Bionic Boogie release Tiger Tiger. When it comes to Gregg Diamond, I've been a pretty big fan of both Bionic Boogie's 1978 Hot Butterfly LP and his 1978 Star Cruiser LP, however until now, I had never heard the Tiger Tiger record. That being said, I think I enjoy Hot Butterfly a bit more, however that doesn't mean Tiger Tiger doesn't have it's moments. The song that I by far enjoy the most has to be the titled track "Tiger Tiger (Feel Good For A While)" which has a similiar feel as his "Chains" single. Other highlights include "Take The Boogie Home" and "Lay It On The Line". Overall I would recommend picking up a copy of the record, especially if you've enjoyed some of Mr. Diamond's other Bionic Boogie releases.

About a week ago I was excited to find a used copy of Machine's 1979 self-titled record that features the disco classic "There But For The Grace of God Go I" which is one of the most requested songs at STUDIO!. Machine was basically a studio disco group put together by legendary producer August Darnell, a founding member of both Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and Kid Creole And The Coconuts. The album's single, "There But For The Grace of God Go I" remains to be the most memorable and known track from the group's existence. Other stand out tracks on the record consist of the lesser known "Marisa", "You've Come A Long Way, Baby", and "Get Your Body Ready". Overall, it's hard to think of a more classic release from August Darnell's impressive catalogue which certainly includes a number of great dance gems. I'm just happy to now have the ability to fulfill those 'few rare enjoyable' requests each and every Wednesday.

I'm pretty exhausted today, which seems to always be the case 'the day after' every STUDIO! night. So instead of rambling off a lot of info, I'll just share a disco classic with Easy Going's 1978 version of "Suzie Q". This is just one of the many classic cuts from the legendary italo disco group's brilliant and influential career. And even though I think Easy Going got better with future releases, "Suzie Q" remains to be one of my early favorites from the group. On a side note, the artwork to the self-titled release must be one of the best I've seen to date.

Another great track that legendary disco producer Alec R. Costandinos had his finger prints on, was Tony Rallo & The Midnite Band's 1979 disco classic "Holdin' On". This co-produced Costandinos cut was conducted and arranged by Tony Rallo, whom also helped write music for 70's groups Shake, Dalida, The Syncophonic Orchestra and many many others. "Holdin' On" was one of the major highlights from the 1979 Casablanca Records released album, Burnin' Alive which was also co-produced by Danny Goldschmidt. And even though this was Mr. Rallo's only outing with The Midnite Band, "Holdin' On" as well as the Burnin' Alive LP remain to be classic disco releases.

More Mucho Macho

Here is another rare Macho cut, this time "You Got Me Running" from the 1980 album Roll. First off, I'll just say that as a whole, I don't think this record even stands up to there classic 1978 debut I'm A Man. That being said the record has a couple of classic tracks including "You Got Me Running", as well as "Got To Make A Move" and "Montreal". You can tell that as the 1970's were ending and disco as a genre was somewhat dying out, as far as in the mainstream, Macho, which consists of Mauro Malavasi along with co-producer Celso Valli, where experimenting with there sound, using a lot more distorted and gritty guitar riffs. However, not all was lost, as the album cut's of both "You Got Me Running" and "Got To Make A Move" have become two of my many favorite tracks by the group. Even though I think the record is a considerable drop-off from their debut, I still think the record contains some lesser known hidden gems worth owning.

Shoogie Wanna Boogie

One of my favorite records that I picked up over this past summer is David Mathews & Whirlwind's 1976 jazzy disco classic Shoogie Wanna Boogie. I heard of David Mathews (no, he's not the same guy that plays in that over-rated hippie jam band) through an older unreleased Rune Lindbæk re-edit, as well as his solid production work with jazz-funk artist Idris Muhammad. From that point I was excited to hear what else Mr. Mathews had in store. I must say after one listen of Shoogie Wanna Boogie, I was pretty blown away by entire record which features mostly disco and funk covers of popular known songs like "You Keep Me Hanging On", "California Dreaming", "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "My Girl". The record has all of those signature elements that exist on most of the great records released by the Kudu label, great production and solid jazz-infuenced instrumentation over a disco-funk groove. In my opinion, this record is definitely a true masterpiece, especially if your one of those people like me who enjoy disco cover versions of popular known songs. I definitely look forward in the future to hunting down some more of this legendary producer's work, however for now I'll sit back and enjoy this rare and collectable treasure.

A classic disco track that I've been enjoying throughout the summer has been Fat Larry's Band's 1979 "Lookin' For Love". This classic boogie cut was released as the title track to the Lookin' For Love LP, which is another fine release from the legendary Fantasy label. The song also gained some more recent attention as it was re-edited and included on Dimitri From Paris's In The House of Love mix compilation which came out a few years back. Many believe the groups 1982 boogie classic "Act Like You Know" is the group's finest effort, however, being a bigger fan of late 1970's disco genre music, I believe the Philadelphia based funk band shined the brightest on "Lookin' For Love, a true disco gem that reminds me of all those early classic Salsoul releases by groups like Double Exposure, Moment of Truth, Love Committee, and Instant Funk.

Recently I picked up a copy of Blackwell's 1978 disco LP Boogie Down. This record was arranged and composed by Charles Blackwell, as well as co-produced by David Baker and Larry Page of Larry Page Orchestra. This album features a number of solid disco classics including the opening cut "Boogie Down And Mess Around", "I Love To See Ya Dancin'", "Give It All Ya Got", and my personal favorite "Move Your Ass Gringo". Even though this record was Charles Blackwell's only stab at the disco genre, overall he put together a solid production with Boogie Down.

Legendary disco producer Boris Midney has released numerous disco classics under many different names, including Beautiful Bend, Caress, U.S.A. - European Connection, and Double Discovery, however one of my all-time favorite records from this Russian born producer is Beautiful Bend's 1978 LP Make That Feeling Come Again!. This amazing record features four tracks, two on each side, basically mixed together to make two incredibly long however effective disco gems. I usually struggle to listen to long medley's, however on this record Midney does a nice job of including some strong substantial breaks without stoping the beat in order to show where one song stops and another begins. My favorite cut on the record is the second half of the A-side "Boogie Motion", which has a nice funky mid-tempo disco groove throughout as well as a very catching chorus hook. Overall, this record showcases some of the producer's finest work and is definitely a "must-have" for all Boris Midney fans.

Journey Into Paradise

Lately I've been getting into the disco group Paradise Express. This disco project was made up of the husband and wife musical tag-team of Vi-Ann and Herb Jimmerson, along with a string of other backing musicians and vocalists including Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash from Two Tons of Fun. In just a few short years during the late 1970's, Paradise Express recorded and released numerous disco classics like "Dance", "Let's Fly", "You Set Me On Fire" and "We Are One", as well as two solid full-length LP's in 1978's sel-titled debut Paradise Express and Let's Fly the following year. They were one of the many outstanding disco groups being put out by Fantasy Records during that time. Even though this group had a very short existence, Paradise Express, in my opinion, remains to be one of my favorite groups, next to Sylvester and Two Tons of Fun, from the Fantasy label.

One my favorite tracks that I enjoy to break out every Wednesday is Lorraine Johnson's 1978 hi-energy disco classic "Feed The Flame". This track originally appeared on Johnson's second LP Learning To Dance All Over Again and was produced by Jesse Boyce and Moses Dillard, whom have been part of many solid disco projects including Saturday Night Band, Constellation Orchestra and Frisky. "Feed The Flame" is definitely my favorite cut from Johnson, however I also highly recommend people to check out her 1977 single "The More I Get, The More I Want" which was featured on her solid debut album. Overall, it's a perfect disco cut to play at those peaking hours on the dancefloor.

Greatest Performance Of Loleatta's Life

One of my all-time favorite Larry Levan edits is his remix of Loleatta Holloway's 1976 disco classic "Greatest Performance Of My Life". This was one of the many amazing cuts off of Suss'd Records Larry Levan: The Definitive Salsoul Mixes '78-'83 compilation which came out back in 2004. Now I've always been a fan of the original mix of the song which was featured on Holloway's Loleatta LP, however on Levan's edit, he draws out the dramtic acapella intro nicely as well as replacing the song's "at time's more annoying" bridge vocals with a nice instrumental groove that works better on a dancefloor. This edit is a perfect example of the geniusness of Larry Levan, remixing and rearranging a track to push a song to it's greatest heights, making an already classic original even better.

It's Friday and sunny outside, so I'm going to allow myself to get lazy with this post and let the music do the talking. Here is Prins Thomas's re-edit of Matsubara's 1984 funky classic "S.O.S. (Society Of Soul)". This edit was originally included on the Rong Music released Diskomiks EP which features, in my opinion, some of Thomas's best edits. Can I just say that everytime I listen to this track it reminds me of a theme song to a 70's game show, which is probably why I love it so much. Anyways, Enjoy!

Recently, I've been getting into Brazilian conductor Sérgio Mendes' late 70's material. I've come across many Mendes' records here and there, however didn't really know much about the artist until recently. Even though I definitely can't vouch for all of his music, I can say that I'm a pretty big fan of both Sérgio Mendes & The New Brasil '77's 1977 self-titled LP and Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '88 1979 Magic Lady LP. Both albums, which I've picked up recently, are somewhat departures from Mendes earlier work with his Brasil '66. The New Brasil '77 record has a laid back, however funky latin-disco sound to it with standout tracks like "The Real Thing", "Why", and "Mozambique". Magic Lady, on the other hand, contains one of Mendes most high energy dance cuts with "I'll Tell You", as well as other funky disco numbers like "Lonely Woman" and "Let It Go". Overall, Sérgio Mendes is one of those complicated artist to get into because he touches so many musical genres with many of his releases being very unique to themselves, however for people who enjoy the more funky disco era stuff, like myself, I highly recommend checking out both The New Brasil '77 and Magic Lady albums.

This past weekend I flew back to my home town of Sacramento, Ca. for a friend's wedding. During that trip I decided to stop at a couple local record stores to see if I could find any hidden disco gems tucked away in the stacks. I always love going to a small city record store where there isn't a hint of a disco scene, you're bound to pick up at least a few classic records for a ridiculous cheap price. I found the same true when I made stops in Portland and Tacoma this past year. That being said, I did pick-up many great disco finds including Revanche's 1979 Music Man LP, John Davis & The Monster Orchestra's Up Jumped The Devil and Ain't That Enough For You LP's, Loleatta Holloway's classic "Loleatta" LP, Taka Boom's 1979 self-titled LP, as well as many others. However, maybe the overall best find of the weekend came when I picked Two Tons Of Fun's 1980 self-titled disco classic. Two Tons Of Fun where one of those groups I had heard about a lot, but unfortunitely hadn't checked out, so when I came across the record I thought I would give it a listen. From start to finish I was pretty blown away with a very reminiscent sound similiar to Sylvester, whom the two singers Izora Armstead and Martha Wash orginally sang back-up vocals for. Overall, the record is pretty solid with classic cuts like "I Got The Feeling", "Earth Can Be Just Like Heaven", and "One-Sided Love Affair". I highly recommend the record if your a fan of Sylvester's early releases. That being said, it was a nice weekend of great finds in a small city.

Hot Jungle Drums And Voodoo Rhythm

One of my favorite disco cuts for quite sometime has been D.C. LaRue's 1979 classic "Hot Jungle Drums And Voodoo Rhythm" off of his album Forces Of The Night. Throughout LaRue's career, the American disco singer has released some solid disco classics including 1976's "Ca-The-Drals", 1978's "Let Them Dance", and "Do You Want The Real Thing ", among many others. However, I think with "Hot Jungle Drums..." LaRue really hits the "nail on the head" with this hi-energy disco classic. The song was also released as a twelve-inch single through Casablanca Records, which featured an extended version of the track. And on a side note, one of the biggest fans of the song at the time of release was movie star actress Jane Fonda, whom recommended having the song put on her first Jane Fonda Workout Book. Overall, "Hot Jungle Drums And Voodoo Rhythm" is an amazing track that can work nicely at those peek dancefloor moments and just another amazing classic produced and written by D.C. LaRue.

As time goes on and the more I continue to listen to his releases, Dutch disco singer Theo Vaness is becoming one of my all-time favorite artists. I know he has been mentioned before on this blog for his classic 1979 Bad Bad Boy LP, however that being said, you can't ignore his other two full-length records 1978's Back To Music and his self-titled LP in 1979. Both records contained some amazing disco gems including "Thank God There's Music", "Back To Music (the song)", "Star Fever", and my personal favorite "I Can't Dance Without You". Overall, if you come to STUDIO! on a Wednesday, you have a good chance of hearing a track or two by this artist whom in a very short time put together an impressive collection of disco classics.

Doing overtime today with multiple posts (thanks to my 'secret crush' on Carly Simon), I'm going to keep this post short and sweet with Ottawan's 1979 disco classic "D.I.S.C.O.". I really enjoying the overall "tropical disco" feel to the song, and it's definitely one of those tracks that really grows on you over time. I admit that it took me a little time to get into some of the song's vocals, however over the past few weeks I've started to warm up to them and really get into the entire production. This is probably one of those fun summertime anthem classics that works nicely in those "End of The Summer" disco mixes. ENJOY!

Lately I've been getting into John Davis & The Monster Orchestra and the records he released from the mid to late 1970's. I became interested in Mr. Davis when I came across a used copy of his 1978 twelve inch single "Ain't That Enough For You" a while back. I remember at the time I picked up the record, I also bought many other classic disco records by many other artist and for some reason the twelve inch single kind of got shelved before I had a chance to really absorb the record, which does happen at times, especially when you buy as many records as I do. Anyways, a couple weeks ago I was sorting through some of the records that I hadn't listen to for quite sometime and I came across the John Davis single and decided to take a better look at the single, especially since it is my collection. And after I had sometime to sit down and listen to it, I realized how great the song is and couldn't understand why I sat on it for so long. Ever since, I've been checking out many other John Davis & The Monster Orchestra songs with much delight, discovering some real disco gems in the proccess. Now I'm finding myself on a quest to collect more of his music, especially his 1979 LP The Monster Strikes Again which features the amazing "Love Magic" and the Ashford & Simpson cover of "Bourgie' Bourgie'", as well as the full-length LP of Ain't That Enough For You with came out back in 1978. Overall, it was nice to go through my own collection and find some unplayed hidden classics laying around. It's like going to record store I suppose in your own living room.

In honor of the great Isaac Hayes whom unfortunitely passed away yesterday in his Tennesse home, here is an amazing Ron Hardy white-label edit of Hayes' 1975 classic funky dancefloor cut "I Can't Turn Around". Hayes, who will probably best be remembered for the Shaft soundtrack, however, throughout his long career Hayes' career went well beyond the 1971 soundtrack, releasing many amazing funk, soul, and even disco classics throughout the years. Some of my favorites that come to mind are "Zeke The Freak", "Don't Let Go", "I Can't Turn Around", and of course "Theme From 'Shaft'". Regardless of your favorite track, it's obvious that Isaac Hayes legacy, music, and influence will be forever lasting.

Jungle Drums & Wild Fantasies

I recently came across Wild Fantasy's 1978 disco classic Jungle Drums, and I have to admit I haven't been able to put the record down since. This classic album was produced by Tony Hiller of Brotherhood Of Man fame. The record contains amazing dancefloor friendly cuts including "Gypsy Lady", "Africa", "Get It On", and "Africa". I first found out about the group when I found a twelve-inch version of "Africa" for about two dollars and thought it was worth giving it a listen. When it comes to disco, any song or artist with the word "fantasy" and "Africa" included, I find, generally means it's going to be good. This is definitely one of those times that the previous statement is absolutely true, with Wild Fantasy releasing a disco masterpiece in Jungle Drums.

It's safe to say that Brooklyn based disco group Escort is one of my favorite bands to come out over the past few years. Over the past few years they have been releasing some amazing twelve inch singles including "Starlight", "Bright New Life", and "All Through the Night". However, lately I've been finding myself getting back into, after not hearing for a while, maybe their most underrated single "Love in Indigo", which was the groups second release back in 2006. I actually got to see the group about a year ago in San Francisco and "Love in Indigo" was the song I enjoyed the most live. If your one of the few people that haven't caught on to this group, which features about fifteen members to make up a small orchestra of percussion, strings, horns, vocals, bass, and guitar instruments, I highly recommend picking up one of their four singles. The rumor has it that the group is actually working on a full-length album, however no date for a release has been given. Regardless, I think I'll be dropping a few classic Escort cuts later tonight at STUDIO!. Hope to see you there!

Just about every Wednesday night, at some point, I break out the one disco classic released by former Dawn vocalist Tony Orlando, "Don't Let Go". Say what you want about Mr. Orlando and his overall "Las Vegas showbizz" career, however in 1978 the singer took a stab at disco with some success. This "one-off" funky-disco gem was mixed by the legendary disco mixer and engineer Jimmy Simpson and was included on Orlando's Elektra Records debut. The track gained some attention in the disco club scene, which in my opinion has a bit of a Gino Soccio/Don Ray/Cerrone overall feel to it. Recently the song was re-edited by Pete Herbert of Reverso 68 fame and included on a Disco Deviance released twelve-inch. Unfortunitely, this was Tony's only "disco" attempt, falling back more towards his Dawn roots, which I admit am not a fan of. However, that being said the singer did leave us disco enthusiasts with an incredible disco classic.

It's safe to say that I love Ray Martinez and every single track that he produced in the 1970's. From Amant's "If There's Love" to Sassy's classic "Theme From Disco 77", from George McCrae's "Kiss Me (The Way I Like It)" to his solo cut of "The Natives Are Restless", Martinez made a name for himself as a break through disco producer and musician during the 1970's. Helping solidify the "Miami Sound" of the late 70's, this Cuban native went onto create Miami based Paris International Records where he released records by Amant, Celi Bee, and others. One of my favorite Martinez produced records is the 1979 self-titled LP under the name Passion. This four track album includes disco classics "Don't Bring Back Memories" and "In New York" and remains to be one of the hardest to find disco records. Adding to that, the record consists of one of the sexiest album covers, which could make it a disco collectable all by itself. Overall, this was just another classic disco release from one of the genre's most legendary producers.

Even though his career was cut short due to his unfortunite death in 1982, Patrick Cowley was involved with many amazing italo projects, working with artist's like Sylvester, Donna Summer, Paul Parker, and many others while also helping to start the San Francisco based italo label Megatone Records. As many of you already know, Cowley released his own material including the 1981 classic LP Megatone Man, followed by albums Menergy and Mind Warp. During his career there might be many songs that could stick out as "defining moments" of Cowley's own music, however, for me the two songs that come to me first when thinking of Cowley's brilliant career is 1981's "Megatron Man" and "Menergy". Both became huge "anthem like" favorites among San Francisco's underground gay disco scene which really helped establish himself and his label. That's not to say he didn't have his hands on many other amazing releases, including Sylvester's high-energy classic "Do You Wanna Funk", an incredible remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", and Paul Parker's 1982 chart-topping single "Right on Target". It's safe to say that Patrick Cowley will forever have a lasting imprint on the gay disco and San Francisco music scenes, and it's unforunite that his life was cut so short especially as it was just starting to peak. That being said, Cowley did leave behind an incredible legacy that can be forever lived through his amaing productions.

Disco Reservation Nation

Here is an interestingly "Native American" themed disco track by one of Salsoul's more cosmically minded groups, Orlando Riva Sound (aka O.R.S.). This slow cosmic grooving song, entitled "Indian Reservation", was originally released in 1979 as a 12-inch single and was produced by Anthony Monn, a well known disco era producer that worked with Amanda Lear, Judy Cheeks, and Magnifique. This was just one of the many great cosmically-minded disco records released during the groups existence, releasing other great records like the 1978 classic LP Body To Body Boogie, as well as the amazing Tom Moulton mixed and co-produced single "Moon-Boots" that same year. Regardless, "Indian Reservation" still remains to be my personal favorite from this legendary disco group.

Caught Up In Risco Music

In the late 1970's, Joe Isaacs put together a very unique disco project titled, Risco Connection. In this project's short life span, Risco Connection released some amazing 12" singles covering some classic disco tracks including McFadden & Whitehead's 1978 "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now", Inner Life's 1979 "I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)", Chic's "Good Times", and Diana Ross's "It's My House" to name a few. This group was able to successfully take these original songs and make them their own, adding their own unique blend of laid-back latin-disco, as well as elements of dub and reggae. Risco Connection tracks make for great 'cool-down' songs within a disco set, as well as great sample material for House, Hip-Hop, and Dub producers. Regardless, Joe Isaacs not only put together a solid disco project during the late 1970's, he was able to put together one that had one of the more unique and interesting sounds. When you put on a Risco Connection record, you definitely know what your getting into, sound wise, however for this particular case, that's a good thing!

Pow Pow Pow...Shine Down On My Day

If you were to make it down to STUDIO! on a Wednesday night, one of the songs you are almost certain to hear is the overwhelming crowd favorite "Pow Pow Pow" by the italo group Capricorn. I picked up this hard-to-find 1980 classic about a year ago when I first visited New York, along with their self-titled twelve-inch "Capricorn" which in my opinion is equally as good. Both records were written and produced by Claudio Simonetti and Giancarlo Meo, who were also responsible for the legendary italo group Easy Going. Given the brilliance of every release Capricorn put out, which also included the classic twelve inch I Need Love in 1982, the group's existences was overall very short, releasing only three singles. That being said, they are all amazing italo classics and very hard-to-find, so if your lucky enough to find a copy, I would recommend forking out the money and picking one up. If not, fill free to stop by Wednesday night where you'll probably hear a track or two by the legendary group.
